Citizen Lab, Where the Internet is an Open Public Commons

Citizen Lab is a great site to troll if you’re at all interested in cyberactivism. Centered at the University of Toronto’s Munk Centre for International Studies, this group, directed by Ronald J. Deibert, endorses the strong normative claim that the Internet ought to be “protected and preserved” as an “open public commons”.

In addition to publishing a guide to evading Internet Censorship–say at high school libraries, under oppressive regimes (e.g. China, Iran), possibly at work–this loose collection of academics single-handedly uncovered the Chinese governments cyber-spying operation, nicknamed GhostNet, as well as a globally distributed cyber-fraud operation, centered in Russia  (check out this recent Search Engine podcast for a great interview with Deibert).

I’ve put a link to their site on this blog. I would encourage anyone interested in policy regarding the Internet, Internet Spying or cyberactivism to check out Citizen Lab’s valuable resources.
